Minister: Russia to lose 800,000 working age people per year

ANOSINO, Moscow Region, Sep 25 (PRIME) – Russia’s demographic situation is dire, and the country will be losing about 800,000 people of working age per year in the next five or six years, Economic Development Minister Maxim Oreshkin said Monday in a conference.

“Speaking of Russia, especially in regards to the coming five or six years, our situation with demography is one of the heaviest in the world, and we will lose about 800,000 people of working age per year due to our demographic structure,” he said.

Russia hit its lowest birth rate in 1999, and those who were born that year turn 18 now and become the workforce. “The generation was very small, so we will have negative dynamics of the amount of the working age people,” he said.

On September 19, the Federal State Statistics Service said that the number of economically active people stood at 76.9 million.
